Has your vision become blurred or cloudy? If so you may have cataracts. In any event, if you do not know the exact cause of this problem you should make an appointment to see our eye doctor very soon. Some eye diseases call for immediate attention. Cataracts are common eye problems, especially in older adults. The good news is that cataracts can generally be easily treated with small incision cataract surgery. If you would like to have your eyes examined by our eye specialist in Ramsey, make an appointment to see us at Wyckoff Ophthalmology.
At Wyckoff ophthalmology our expert and highly trained ophthalmologist is Dr. Melanie Sinatra. Our practice’s skilled optometrist is Dr. Andrea B. Antonelli. Cataracts can easily be diagnosed during a comprehensive eye exam. Cataracts can occur in one or both eyes. When cataracts are diagnosed they can either be treated by cataract surgery, or they can be treated by the patient getting a new lens prescription and making sure that they work with better lighting. However, eventually the time will likely come when new lenses will no longer be able to fix the vision problem. And unfortunately of cataracts are allowed to develop, they can eventually cause blindness. So cataracts are not a vision problem that you want to ignore; they will never get better by themselves. Although there is no treatment to cure cataracts, cataracts can be easily operated on with laser therapy using small incision cataract surgery. Our eye specialist in Ramsey will be able to perform this surgery on an outpatient basis, with the patient needing only local anesthesia.
During small incision cataract surgery, a tiny incision is made with the laser in the patient’s eye. It is through this tiny incision that the damaged natural lens is removed, and a new man-made lens is inserted into the patient’s eye. Generally this new lens will provide the patient with excellent distance vision. Today some patients are opting to get progressive lenses inserted that will provide excellent vision at various distances. You will need to check with your insurance company to see what is covered in this regard. Cataract surgery is generally performed on one eye at a time. The surgery takes a short time to perform, generally around 20 minutes or so. Recovery for the patient is very comfortable. Because of the tiny incision, the patient does not need any stitches or even a Band-Aid after the operation.
